Patients at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga are receiving care in darkness following a prolonged power outage in parts of the facility.
The affected areas include the Eye Unit, the In-Patient Pharmacy, the Ear-Nose-and-Throat Unit, the Blood Bank and the Dental Unit.
During a visit on July 2, 2026, by Media Without Borders, patients who had just undergone cataract surgeries were seen lying on the floor in the dark, using mobile phone torchlights to eat and take medication.
Staff members say the problem, which has persisted for several months, has been reported to management but remains unresolved.
Health experts warn the situation poses serious risks including medication errors and delayed emergency response.
