Media Without Borders has received documents presented as “proof” that the electric tricycles recently found in the yard of a block-making factory in Bolgatanga, capital of Ghana’s Upper East Region, were purchased in China by Alhaji Farouk Hamza with his own resources.
He is a former Executive Secretary to Ghana’s Hajj Board Secretariat and was the 2024 general elections campaign coordinator for the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the Upper East Region.
The author of this report had contacted him on Sunday, 31 May 2026, for his comment (and he spoke) after his name was mentioned by some NPP activists in connection with the e-tricycles.
The activists claimed that the automobiles found at the block-making factory, reportedly numbering 35, were among some 100 electric tricycles shipped to Bolgatanga in 2024. The vehicles, they said, were meant to be distributed to some party members to aid Bawumia’s campaign.

They further alleged that the 35 e-tricycles were being hidden in a warehouse to support the campaign of an unnamed individual ahead of the next regional executive elections.
But Alhaji Farouk told this author on Sunday that he personally bought the electric tricycles in China before the 2024 elections to support the party’s campaign and to introduce them to the Bolgatanga market. He said he gave some to parliamentary candidates in the region for their electioneering activities and kept the rest in a warehouse for a businessman to sell.

“They can write or go to the National Chairman of the NPP, or the Presidential Candidate, or the General Secretary to find out if at any point in time, not just even in 2024 but after the 2020 elections all the way to 2024, whether any item, electric motors, were sent by the party to me or to anybody in the name of the party. They can go and find out,” he challenged them.
After a report was published on this development the following morning, a friend to Alhaji Farouk (name withheld) forwarded to this writer some pictures and copies of some import documents in the evening. He said the documents were proof that Alhaji Farouk personally purchased the e-tricycles and, for that reason, had the right to distribute or sell the items as he pleased.
The documents were not mentioned to this author during his interview with Alhaji Farouk and they were not mentioned before the previous report was published at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. The documents were only made available to this author at 4:52 p.m. on Monday via WhatsApp and described as proof. Meanwhile, sources say the tricycles were moved from the factory early on Tuesday (today) to a warehouse in Bolgatanga.
