Supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have taken over some streets in Ghana’s Central Region as the party is said to have taken an early lead at the Assin North Constituency by-election.
The NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson is said to have won 16,510 votes from 96 of the 99 polling stations so far. Charles Opoku of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) currently has 12,321 votes. Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, representing the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has 81.
The NPP government initiated the construction of some roads and bridges in the constituency ahead of the by-election. Some observers fear those projects might stall in the event that the NPP loses the by-election.
