The latest polls conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, a nonpartisan company that provides data-driven research and insights on politics, have shown that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is heading back to where it used to be after the upcoming general elections— opposition.
The Executive Director of the research firm, Mussa Dankwah, made the outcome of the latest polls known to Ghana Television (GTV) when he appeared on the station’s breakfast show on Monday (today).
The survey shows the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, hitting 53.2% ahead of the NPP’s presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, who is at 40.0%.
Bawumia dropped to 40.0% from the 40.6% he got from the October 19 episode of the weekly polls that put Mahama at 51.1%.
Conducted between October 21 and October 26 with 1, 949 respondents interviewed, the polls also show Bawumia dominating in only 3 regions— Ashanti, Eastern and North East— as Mahama leads in the other 13 regions and improves even in the 3 regions where Bawumia traditionally is expected to win.
“People could be loyal to you because of the ethnic background. But when the economy bites them, they would forget about the ethnicity and use their stomachs and pockets to vote. That’s what we are seeing,” Dankwah told GTV.
Mahama has also beaten Bawumia hands down across all the country’s religious groups and subsets, according to the polls.
The executive director affirmed there would be no run-off and stated that even in the unlikely event of a run-off Mahama, as far as the new polls were concerned, would win with 57% going to the former president and 43% to the vice president.
“Consistently Mahama has been above 50%. Also we know from history that Mahama outperforms his polling numbers because of the experience we’ve had with his numbers in the past.
“On the day (Election Day) his number could be higher than this, and that is the problem the NPP must watch out for,” Dankwah concluded, adding that his outfit would continue to undertake the weekly polls until November 18.
The general elections come off on Saturday, 7 December 2024, across the country’s 275 constituencies with 11 other presidential candidates joining the two main contenders in the race for the seat of government.
Among the 11 candidates are: Hassan Ayariga, All People’s Congress (APC); Kofi Akpaloo, Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG); Nana Akosua Frimpomaa, Convention People’s Party (CPP); Kofi Koranteng, independent; George Twum-Barima-Adu, independent and Nana Kwame Bediako (Cheddar), New Force Movement.
The other candidates include; Alan Kyerematen, independent; Mohammed Frimpong, National Democratic Party (NDP); Christian Kwabena Andrews, Ghana Union Movement (GUM); Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr, Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and Akua Donkor, Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
