Videos: Police officers flee station as attackers set bus on fire at Walewale; attack linked to Bawku conflict

Human Rights NewsVideos: Police officers flee station as attackers set bus on fire at Walewale; attack linked to Bawku conflict

A commercial bus has been set ablaze by unknown armed men in front of the Walewale Police Station in Ghana’s North East Region.

Eyewitnesses have linked the attack to the protracted conflict in Bawku, a municipality in neighbouring Upper East Region.

All the police officers on duty fled the station, according to the eyewitnesses, when the attackers opened fire from arms that sounded more sophisticated than the weapons the police personnel were carrying.

The Ghana National Fire Service did not arrive in time to put out the flames.

The bus was travelling from Kumasi to Garu. The driver of the VIP bus was shot dead before the attackers also fired gunshots at the tyres and the body of the bus, they added. A number of passengers were also injured during the attack.

Eyewitness are heard in videos taken from the scene of the attack expressing fears, as the bus burns, that the chieftaincy conflict in Bawku is spreading to Walewale.
