Police have arrested six persons in connection with the murder of a tricycle rider in Bolgatanga East, a district in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
The deceased, Akolbila Blessing, was allegedly attacked and beaten to death at Dulugu, a suburb of the district’s capital Zuarungu,for failing to account for daily sales.
A press release issued by the Upper East Regional Police Command on Monday, 31 August 2026, mentioned the suspects as: Avandiba Atubiga Kante, 26; Atua Atombire Mpika, 40; Amale Nyaaba Nicholas, 30; Atua Ayinbotima, 22; Atuah Nsobila Prosper, 21; and Ayine Albert Sunday, 39.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that on August 27, 2026, the victim was assaulted by the suspects after he allegedly failed to make sales to his employer, one Mpika, who owns the tricycle.
He was found unconscious in his room the following day and was rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The release says the six suspects are in police custody assisting investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before the District Magistrate Court in Bolgatanga on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
“The Command wishes to caution the public against resorting to violence in resolving disputes and assures the public of its resolve to enforce the law to the letter,” the release said.
The incident was first reported by Word FM, a community-based radio station in Zuarungu, on Friday, August 28. The swift arrest of the suspects has since been commended by members of the public, who are calling for justice to be served.
“We are extremely glad and we must commend the police for arresting these people in no time,” said a Zuarungu resident, Mark Nsobila, on Monday.
He added: “They were arrested yesterday (Sunday). The Regional Police Commander has shown that you can’t commit a crime in this region and get away with it no matter who you are and where you are hiding.”
